IPL 2027 mini auction: retention, purse, and squad-watch
The IPL auction window (typically December each year, with retention / release deadlines in November) is the single biggest pre-season event for fantasy IPL. This page is an editorial outlook page from an independent information site — not insider information. We use "expected", "reported", and "based on publicly available reports" throughout because the official retention and auction lists are not yet published as of 2026-09-30. Use this page to track the retention window, monitor which marquee players are rumored for release, and pre-validate your captain-pick framework for the next IPL season. Dream11App does not run contests; we explain the rules and the decision framework.
Retention window: November 2026 (expected)
Based on the historical pattern of the IPL, the retention window for the next season is expected to open in November 2026 and close 7–14 days later. Each franchise decides which players to retain, which to release, and which to put up for the mini auction. The retention window is followed by the auction itself, typically in December. As of 2026-09-30 the BCCI / IPL has not officially published the 2027 retention schedule; the following is based on historical patterns.
Expected retention window
Mid-to-late November 2026. Last 4 seasons have opened retention in the 2nd or 3rd week of November. We will update this section when BCCI publishes the official dates.
Expected auction date
Mid December 2026 (typical). Auction duration is 1–2 days depending on the number of players up for sale. Pre-auction lists are usually published 3–5 days before.
Retention rules
Each franchise can retain up to 6 players (cap of 4 capped retentions + 2 uncapped, or all 6 uncapped). Retention cost is deducted from the auction purse at the published rate (₹18 Cr for 1st, ₹14 Cr for 2nd, etc., per the 2024 rules).
Release rules
Franchises may release any number of players before the retention deadline. Released players enter the auction pool unless bought back by their original franchise via Right to Match (RTM) card, where applicable.
Expected purse value and squad composition
The IPL 2027 auction purse is expected to follow the trajectory of recent seasons: ₹100 Cr total purse per franchise, with a base price slab structure (₹2 Cr for marquee, ₹1.5 Cr / ₹1 Cr / ₹50 L for capped tiers, ₹30 L / ₹20 L for uncapped). This is based on publicly reported BCCI frameworks; the exact purse figure for IPL 2027 will be confirmed when BCCI publishes the auction rules.
Total purse (expected)
₹100 Cr per franchise (expected, consistent with recent seasons). Reduced from ₹90–95 Cr base + incremental top-up reported in some years.
Squad size
25 players per squad max (18 Indian + 7 overseas, or 19 Indian + 6 overseas, etc.). Minimum 18 players for the playing season; 11 in the playing XI per match.
Auction pool size
Typically 200–300 players enter the auction pool across all franchises. Of these, ~70–80 are bought; the rest go unsold and re-enter the next auction unless picked up via mid-season replacement.
Base price slabs
₹2 Cr (marquee), ₹1.5 Cr, ₹1 Cr, ₹50 L (capped players); ₹30 L, ₹20 L (uncapped). Franchises may set a higher base price for specific players; the player must consent.
Marquee players rumored for release (speculative)
The following is a list of players publicly reported as candidates for release by their franchises, based on coverage from ESPN Cricinfo, Cricbuzz, and IPL BCCI's official communications as of 2026-09-30. These are speculative editorial summaries of public reports; the actual retention / release decisions are not yet official. We will update this section once the official retention list is published.
India internationals
Several India internationals across franchises have been publicly discussed as release candidates based on age (35+), injury record, or recent form dip. The official retention list will clarify. We do not list specific names until reports are corroborated by 2+ outlets.
Overseas marquee
A few overseas players are reportedly on the bubble based on performance-vs-cost. Some franchises have publicly indicated a willingness to "reset the overseas cohort"; the official list is the source of truth.
All-rounders and death-overs specialists
All-rounder categories and death-overs specialists are usually the most-traded asset class. Expect a significant reshuffle in the 2027 auction based on the expected T20 World Cup 2026 outcome.
Uncapped breakout candidates
Uncapped players who broke out in IPL 2026 are expected to draw significant auction interest. Use the recent-form + ownership-% differential to pre-validate which uncapped players to watch.
Fantasy impact: how auction outcomes change captain picks
Auction outcomes are the largest single factor in pre-season fantasy IPL captain-matrix re-validation. A new franchise means different team composition, different role splits, and different ownership-% patterns. Your captain-matrix logic does not change — but the inputs do. The section below maps auction outcomes to captain-matrix inputs.
New franchise = reset ownership %
When a marquee player moves to a new franchise, their ownership % in fantasy contests resets based on the new team's fan base. Captain picks that were over-owned in the old franchise become differentials in the new franchise.
Role splits change
A player who was the sole frontline spinner for Franchise A may be one of three spinners in Franchise B. Role stability drops from 3 to 1 or 2 in the captain matrix. Adjust your pre-auction framework accordingly.
Purse remaining = late-auction picks
Franchises with purse remaining in the late auction often target differential picks — uncapped players, lower-base-price overseas players. These become captain-matrix differentials once they enter the playing XI.
Re-validation checklist
Once the official retention + auction lists are published, re-validate: (1) ownership % per player, (2) role stability per player, (3) ceiling per player, (4) venue fit per player. Then lock your IPL 2027 captain matrix.
Watch list: where to track official announcements
For the official retention / release / auction lists, refer to the following primary sources. Do not lock your fantasy XI based on unofficial previews; wait for the official BCCI / franchise announcement.
BCCI / IPL official
The BCCI / IPL Twitter account (@IPL) and the official IPL website (ipl.bcci.tv) are the primary source. The retention deadline and auction date are first announced here.
Franchise official
Each franchise's official Twitter / Instagram account publishes the retention list within 24 hours of the BCCI deadline. Cross-check 2–3 franchises before drawing conclusions.
ESPN Cricinfo
ESPN Cricinfo (espncricinfo.com) provides editorial coverage of the retention / auction window. Use the player pages for retention history and the auction tracker for live results.
Cricbuzz
Cricbuzz (cricbuzz.com) provides complementary coverage of the retention / auction window. The auction tracker includes bid-by-bid updates once the auction starts.
