Squad composition rules in IPL

Each IPL franchise can carry up to 25 players in the squad, with up to 8 overseas. The playing XI per match must have at most 4 overseas players. Impact-player rules (introduced in IPL 2023) allow each franchise to substitute one player from a list of 4 substitutes at any point in the match; the substitute can bat, bowl and field in place of the original player.

Impact-player rule

Each franchise names 4 substitutes; one can be swapped in at any point in the match. The substitute can bat, bowl and field in place of the original player.

Replacement rules

Injuries allow mid-tournament replacements (with BCCI approval). Most franchises carry a 17-22-player effective roster plus 3-4 development players.
