TDS on Dream11 winnings: 30% deduction explained
This page is informational only and is not tax, legal, or financial advice. Consult a chartered accountant for advice specific to your situation. Last reviewed: 2026-09-30. TDS on online fantasy winnings in India is governed by Section 194BA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (introduced via the Finance Act 2023, with rules notified as Income Tax Rule 31ACB). The current threshold is net winnings above ₹10,000 in a financial year; the rate is 30%. Dream11 deducts TDS at source and issues Form 16A as proof of deduction. This page walks through the rule, the operational flow inside Dream11, an illustrative bracket table, the certificate retrieval process, and the ITR filing context.
Section 194BA overview: the rule, threshold, and rate
Section 194BA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (introduced via the Finance Act 2023) applies to "net winnings from online games" during a financial year. The rule came into effect from 1 April 2023 and is operationalised through Income Tax Rule 31ACB. The TDS rate is 30% on net winnings above the ₹10,000 threshold in a financial year. "Net winnings" is defined as winnings minus the amount used to participate in the online game (entry fee).

Rule 31ACB

Threshold ₹10,000
TDS applies when net winnings exceed ₹10,000 in a financial year (1 April to 31 March). The threshold is on net winnings, not gross winnings or per-contest winnings. Below the threshold, no TDS is deducted.
Rate 30%
The TDS rate is 30% of net winnings above the threshold. This is a flat rate — no rebate under Section 87A applies to TDS deducted under 194BA. The rate is uniform across contest types, entry fees, and platforms.
How Dream11 implements TDS: the operational flow
Dream11 deducts TDS at source when your cumulative net winnings cross the ₹10,000 threshold in a financial year. The deduction happens automatically at the time of withdrawal or winnings credit. PAN card is mandatory for the deduction and certificate issuance; without a verified PAN, winnings cannot be withdrawn above the threshold.
Auto-deduction at withdrawal
Dream11 deducts TDS when you withdraw winnings above the threshold. The deduction appears as a separate line item in your transaction history. Pre-threshold withdrawals are not deducted.
PAN mandatory
PAN card must be verified (linked to Aadhaar) before TDS deduction. Without PAN verification, withdrawals above the threshold are blocked. Aadhaar alone is not sufficient for TDS deduction.
Threshold is financial-year cumulative
The ₹10,000 threshold is calculated as cumulative net winnings across all contests in the financial year (1 April to 31 March). Per-contest winnings above ₹10,000 do not by themselves trigger TDS; cumulative winnings above ₹10,000 do.
Bonus cash treatment
TDS applies to net winnings only. Bonus cash used to enter contests is not deductible as entry fee. Cash deposits are deductible. The bonus-vs-cash distinction affects the "net winnings" calculation; verify with the official Dream11 wallet flow.
Illustrative bracket table (not a calculator)
The table below is an illustrative example based on the FY 2025-26 Section 194BA rate of 30% on net winnings above the ₹10,000 threshold. It is not a calculator — it does not accept user input. The numbers are rounded to the nearest rupee. For your specific case, consult a chartered accountant or the Income Tax e-filing portal.
0 – ₹10,000 net winnings
TDS deducted: ₹0. The full amount is paid out. No Form 16A is generated below the threshold. Threshold is the cut-off for the first rupee of TDS.
₹10,001 – ₹50,000 net winnings
Illustrative example: ₹50,000 net winnings → 30% TDS on ₹40,000 (the amount above ₹10,000) = ₹12,000. The first ₹10,000 is not taxed. Actual TDS depends on per-finance-year cumulative net winnings.
₹50,001 – ₹5,00,000 net winnings
Illustrative example: ₹5,00,000 net winnings → 30% TDS on ₹4,90,000 (above ₹10,000) = ₹1,47,000. Receive ₹3,53,000. Illustrative only.
Above ₹5,00,000 net winnings
TDS rate is the same 30% (no surcharge, no cess in the TDS itself, though ITR filing may apply additional cess). For high-win cases, consult a CA about advance tax obligations under Section 207.
TDS certificate (Form 16A) and ITR filing context
After TDS is deducted, Dream11 issues Form 16A (TDS certificate) for the relevant quarter. The certificate is downloadable from the official Dream11 wallet section under "My Documents" or "TDS Certificates". Use the certificate when filing your Income Tax Return (ITR) — the TDS credit appears in your Form 26AS / AIS at the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Where to find Form 16A
Log into the official Dream11 platform → My Profile / My Documents → TDS Certificates. Quarter-wise certificates are available within 15 days of the quarter ending. For FY 2025-26, the certificate for Q4 (Jan-Mar 2026) is typically available by mid-April 2026.
Cross-check on Form 26AS / AIS
After downloading the certificate, verify the TDS credit in your Form 26AS / Annual Information Statement (AIS) on the Income Tax e-filing portal (incometaxindia.gov.in). The TDS amount should match the certificate; if it does not, raise a discrepancy with Dream11 support within 30 days.
ITR filing context
TDS deducted is a pre-payment of your tax liability, not an additional tax. Declare the gross winnings under "Income from Other Sources" in your ITR and claim the TDS as a credit under "TDS on Other Than Salary". Consult a CA for the right ITR form (ITR-1 vs ITR-2 vs ITR-3).
Advance tax (Section 207)
If your tax liability for the year exceeds ₹10,000 (after TDS), you may be required to pay advance tax in quarterly instalments under Section 207. Fantasy winnings are typically irregular income, so advance tax may or may not apply — depends on your overall tax profile. CA advice recommended.
State-level context: no GST on fantasy winnings (central tax only)
Fantasy winnings are taxed at the central level (Section 194BA TDS). GST does not apply to fantasy winnings — GST applies to the platform's entry-fee revenue (the operator pays GST, not the user). State-level gambling taxes do not apply to fantasy sports because the Supreme Court of India has held fantasy sports to be a "game of skill" rather than gambling. State-wise legality is covered separately at /en/dream11-app/legality/.
No GST on user winnings
GST applies to the operator's revenue, not the user's winnings. Users do not pay GST on their winnings. The TDS at 30% is the only tax deducted from winnings above the threshold.
No state gambling tax
State gambling acts (e.g., Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh gaming acts) apply to gambling, not to skill-based games. Fantasy sports have been held to be games of skill by the Supreme Court. State-wise legality context: see /en/dream11-app/legality/.
Central income tax only
The only tax deducted at source on fantasy winnings is under Section 194BA at 30%. Users declare gross winnings under "Income from Other Sources" and claim TDS credit under "TDS on Other Than Salary" in their ITR.
Consult a CA
Tax situations vary widely based on overall income, deductions, business vs. salary classification, and ITR form choice. This page is informational only. Consult a chartered accountant for advice specific to your situation before relying on any of the figures above.

What is Section 194BA?
Section 194BA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 is the section that governs TDS on net winnings from online games in India. It was introduced via the Finance Act 2023 and is effective from 1 April 2023. The TDS rate is 30% on net winnings above ₹10,000 in a financial year. Source: incometaxindia.gov.in.
What is Income Tax Rule 31ACB?
Income Tax Rule 31ACB is the operational rule that implements Section 194BA. It specifies the TDS certificate form (Form 16A), the quarterly statement (Form 26Q), the deductee identification mechanism, and the verification process. Source: incometaxindia.gov.in.
Is TDS deducted on every contest above ₹10,000?
No. The threshold is cumulative net winnings across all contests in the financial year. A single contest with winnings above ₹10,000 does not by itself trigger TDS. The cumulative net winnings (after deducting entry fees) must exceed ₹10,000 in the FY. Verify the threshold calculation in your Dream11 wallet transaction history.
Can I avoid TDS by withdrawing below ₹10,000 each time?
No. Dream11 tracks cumulative net winnings across the financial year. Withdrawing in smaller amounts does not avoid TDS if cumulative net winnings exceed the threshold. The threshold is calculated at the source-deduction point, not at the withdrawal point.
What if I do not have a PAN card?
Without a verified PAN card, Dream11 blocks withdrawals above the TDS threshold. PAN is mandatory for TDS deduction and Form 16A issuance. Aadhaar alone is not sufficient. Link your PAN with Aadhaar before completing KYC.
How do I download Form 26A (TDS certificate)?
Log into the official Dream11 platform → My Profile / My Documents → TDS Certificates. Quarter-wise certificates are typically available within 15 days of the quarter ending. Cross-check the TDS amount in your Form 26AS / AIS on the Income Tax e-filing portal.
